I had the Ram 220 rail mount ball which only accomodates the 1" ball. I didn't have problems with it, but I think you're idea of a 2" ball is a better option.
As far as the rail itself goes, mine held up very well and the rail was never affected. It never got loose or had any slop after a couple of years of operation with the rail mount on it.
I'm curious about the Talon mount that BCB mentioned. How does the flush mount attach to the fiberglass? Is there an aluminum plate on the back side?
